9/23 Studio Day
This week was set aside for in class studio work. It was really helpful to work alongside my classmates as I learned quite a few shortcuts and that I was overcomplicating the assignment. I somehow was not making the connection between how to make a connection between the text and the photo image. I had the idea that I would make my images into animated images using Photoshop. But in the end I realized that I was spending a lot of time making something that compromised the integrity of the original image. So, from this I take away that it is more important (to me, at this level) to start with a quality photo. In addition, I came to realize that the reason that I was not making the “connection between the image and text” was because I was thinking about it too literally. This is something that I learned only thorough my classmates struggles and successes.
One of my frustrations in this class, is that I do not feel that I am actually acquiring Photoshop and Illustrator skills, or at the same rate as the rest of the ladies in the class. I realize that we all learn and work at different speeds, but I can’t help but feel like somehow I am behind. Possibly it is because I am using CS4, and I am constantly trying to figure out where things are located. And possibly this is what is known as the learning curve, after all Rome wasn’t built in a day. One thing I love is the Wacom drawing pad. This tool rocks! I am using my (little, according to most) laptop and the Wacom board is a dream come true for my little cramped-up, shaky hand. Below is my “K image” that was all made possible with the drawing pad. This pad made a couple of hours seem effortless and fun with the smudge tool, paint blob brush, and paint brush tool! I chose Century Gothic font for this letterform because the structure of the letterform is represented between the angles of wings. I chose to use different sizes of this font on a winding path to bring this dead little bumble bee back to life, so that we can still hear the constant buzzing.

How is your confidence in your Illustrator skills currently? I know there is frustration in the varied versions, especially because I am not versed in CS4 and we are using CS2 in the classroom. Also, not being online and not having a real desk, and using a screen that is difficult to share don’t help. These are all problems I didn’t anticipate in taking on additional class members. I think both of you who are doing this are feeling similar frustrations. Fortunately you’re making up for it in enthusiasm… ; )

And I love that Halloween is coming up and my comments are in orange on black.
